Travel Journals of Matt & Mary Capps
third day in Rome
The 3rd day in Rome was probably the most exhausting. It started for us at 7am where we got picked up at our hotel. After picking up a large number of other tourists we maid our way to the Vatican. When we finally arrived we had to walk for about a mile until we found the end of the line. Then we waited in line for a hour and 45 minutes. After going through very strict security we were finally in. I must say that the museum at the Vatican was more impressive than the one at the louver in Paris. But it was also much more crowded. Some of the room was very small and there were some long tight hallways we had to navigate. But at the very end of the tour was the biggest pay off. The Sistine chapel was every thing you thought it would be.
My tip for any one going to visit the Sistine chapel is that the art work on
the sealing looks much better from the back of the room and not from the front.
Another tip I can give you is that there are plenty of things you can buy at the Vatican but the one thing I really wanted to buy was a bible, and the Vatican doesn’t sale bibles.
Tip #3 when you book a tour of the Vatican, don’t just book the
museum. There is much more for you to see. Unfortunately Mary and I did not
know that.
Oh and don’t joke with the Swiss guards they have no sense of
humor. Father Hembro told me that I could drop his name when I got to the Vatican.
I knew he was joking but I thought I would try it any way. It did not work;
they made us go back to the end of the line, and all I got was a really dirty
look from the Swiss Guard.
After getting back from the Vatican we did some more shopping where
I bought a antique golf club, some Italian leather, and other Roman artifacts.
I was very happy about this but was unsure on how I was going to get it back
home. We had a very nice meal some more great wine and then went back to the
hotel for some sleep and to get ready for another big day in Italy.
