General George Washington
Every year on the 4th of July millions of Americans come together
for a fun summer holiday of Picnics, barbecues, parades, fire
works, and family fun with the kids.
This federal holiday is how we calibrate the history, government,
and traditions of the United States of America. However the first
4th of July was more of a war rally than a celebration. And the
date for witch it is named is wrong, it should be the 2nd of July.
The second Continental Congress formally declared the legal separation
of the American Colonies from Great Britton with a vote on July
2nd 1776. But after a committee chaired by Thomas Jefferson wrote
the declaration that was to be published. Congress debated and
revised the declaration, and then two days later on July 4th it
was published for all to see.
The very next year the holiday was celebrated in 1777 with a 13-gun
salute. In 1778 George Washington celebrated the 4th of July by
giving a double ration of rum to all of his soldiers. In 1791
the name independence day occurred for the first time. In 1870
Congress made Independence Day a unpaid holiday for all federal
employees. And in 1938 Congress changed Independence Day to a
paid federal holiday.
The 4th of July is more than just a date or a patriotic holiday.
It personifies the American way of life and the can do attitude
that most Americans have, and most of the other cultures around
the world do not posses nor can not understand.
In 1783 after the treaty of Paris was signed and Great Britton
gave up any clams of possession of its American colonies, many
of the kings, Emperors, and Dictators of Europe and other parts
of the old world eagerly watched to see how the Americans with
their lofty ideas of freedom, and liberty for all would handle
the burden of self government.
All anticipated civil war, and King George of England really expected
to see General Washington march his victories army into Philadelphia,
take control of the government, and crown himself king of North
America.
But it never happened. Instead General Washington marched his
way to New York after the British evacuated the city. Then on
December 23, 1783 after giving a eloquent farewell address to
his men and general staff he disbanded his army and resigned his
commission as commander-in-chief, emulating the Roman General
Cincinnatus (519BC- 438BC) who not once but twice gave up the
power of dictator. He was a exemplar of the republican ideal of
citizen leadership who rejected power.
Washington retired to Mount Vernon, leaving behind the world of
politics and power. But his retirement was short lived, in 1787
he was persuaded to come back to Philadelphia and attend the Constitutional
convention. Then He was elected to power in 1789 and 1792, but
then gave it up again after serving only 2 terms. And the rest
is history. Happy 4th of July every one.
This British farm cat is the first ever-bionic cat. After a farming
accident that chopped off the back legs of this black cat, the
owners decided to spend the money and have artificial legs attached
to their cat.
It is amazing to me when I think about all of the human suffering
in the world and then you see a story like this. Some kid who
is to poor to afford proper prosthetic legs some were in the world
is probably looking at this picture and wondering why not me.
This might be why some portion of the 3rd world cannot understand
the culture and ways of the western world.
I have not seen any reports as to what the procedure coasted.
But I can only hope that the British public health care system
did not pay for it.

BOULDER, Colo. – Police responding to reports
of a man leaping between cars in a Colorado supermarket parking
lot didn't need a detailed description of the suspect. Boulder
Police Sgt. Fred Gerhardt said witnesses on Wednesday reported
a man was dressed as a leprechaun and pretending to shoot at people
with his fingers.
Witnesses told police the man may have made obscene
gestures.
Gerhardt said they likely called police because
the man "was acting bizarre."
Officers did not find anyone matching the description
of the leprechaun.
Gerhardt said this is the first time Boulder police
have received a complaint about a leprechaun.
On April 30, 1789, George Washington, standing on the balcony
of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York, took his oath of
office as the first President of the United States. Of this
he wrote to James Madison:
"As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve
to establish a Precedent, it is devoutly wished on my part,
that these precedents may be fixed on true principles."
