Well here it is again, St Valentines day. It is that one day a
year that we express our love for one another by offering flowers,
love notes and gifts to that special person in our lives. Even
though Valentines Day has been promoted by retail business in
resent years as a way to pledge ones love for each other it was
not invented by the greeting card companies like many people think.
Valentines Day was originally a religious holiday for Christian
martyrs. In 496 AD pope Gelasius 1 established the first Valentines
Day. How ever the day was not associated with romance until the
high middle ages. A love note in the middle ages was more than
just a pledge of ones loves. It was a symbol of ones intellect
and knowledge. Most people who lived in the middle ages could
not write or read. So it was a really big status symbol to give
or receive a valentine.
Valentines Day as we know it did not stare to come around until
the middle 1800s in England. As English literature blossomed so
did the iconic love stories that so many women enjoy reading.
As more and more writers wrote about love, the notion of true
love became more and more prevalent in our modern society.
Today Valentines Day is a multi million-dollar industry focused
on one day per year, February 14th. It is a holiday that is more
important to women than men. But men usually out spend women on
gifts, spending twice as much on average.
For all of you out there who have found true love, have a happy
Valentines Day. For all of you who are still looking for true
love, don’t worry about it too much. The wait is worth it.
